Surfside Club

Dining on the patio by the Missouri River at Surfside Club is an old Omaha tradition. So's the occasional flasher on a passing boat. It's for the dining part of the tradition that we recommend Surfside.

There are only two choices to be made at the Surfside Club: are you dining inside or out, and are you having fried chicken or fried catfish? Having had both, we recommend the catfish (outside if possible), served whole but headless, with a good, crunchy crust that envelops sweet white flesh with the distinct cat flavor that, for some, takes some getting used to. On the side you'll find steak fries, and tartar sauce and lemon. Before the fish, you are served a basket of hot-from-the-fryer sweet corn fritters (another Surfside tradition) with a squeeze bottle of honey, to round out your all-fried dinner. Dessert? We haven't a clue.

The restaurant is a riverside roadhouse seemingly in the country north of Omaha but actually just a little beyond the city limits. An afternoon of drinking beer, eating catfish and fritters, and gazing out at the passing boats on the river, and Iowa beyond, should be placed on any Omaha itinerary.

Note: The Surfside club is open from March until early November.
