La Posta de Mesilla

2410 Calle de San Albino, Mesilla, NM - (505) 524-3524

In a two-hundred-year old adobe building that was a stage stop on the Butterfield Trail, La Posta first opened for business in 1939. It has since become a culinary legend.

The most famous dish on the menu is tostadas compuestas, a a crisp-fried corn tortilla cup into which is ladled red chili con carne, beans, cheese, lettuce and tomato. A combo plate includes one tostada compuesta plus a chili relleno (a large cheese-stuffed, breaded, and deep-fried chili pepper), and a taco as well as guacamole salad. All dinners come with warm corn tortillas and/or sopaipillas.

There is a magical sense of history about La Posta. The several dining rooms are loud and festive and in the vestibule, which has more plants than a tropical rain forest, you will be serenaded by squawking parrots.

Wonderful New Mexican cuisine. We enjoyed the historic atmosphere. The mall-like building contains a few quaint shops. Combo plate was fabulous.

I wanted to take my wife somewhere special for our 33rd anniversary. La Posta hit it out of the park! From the time we entered the restaurant, we knew we were someplace special. The waitstaff was very friendly, the ambience was outstanding, and the food was some of the very best that I've ever tasted. We had steak fajitas and they were as tender as could be.

We moved here from the Carolinas three years ago, and we've been in a lot of restaurants over the years. La Posta is on our top-three list and no matter where we settle, we'll always come back to La Posta. We also checked out the gift shop and they have very fine jewelry. My wife was happy with her selection there and, as for me, the gift shop was the place with all the shirts, cups, and knick-knacks (at 53, a boy and his toys).
