"Bienvenutos a Cancun" reads the sign on a cooler full of beer you see the moment you enter this neighborhood Mexican restaurant. It is indeed a welcoming little place with a handful of tables, those along the front window offering a view of the bumpers of cars in the parking lot. Although I speak little Spanish and the staff isn't too good at English, it was easy to order a super burrito stuffed with carnitas (shredded pork), rice and beans, smothered with shredded cheese and warm salsa and decorated with dabs of sour cream and guacamole. It's a fine burrito, the savory roast pork packing heaps of flavor. I also relished a glass of horchata, the cool sweet rice beverage that is so refreshing with spicy food, as well as a bottle of Jarritos brand mandarin orange soda – also an excellent palate refresher.

Having had only one meal at Cancun, I cannot speak of the tacos, which are available filled with a wide range of ingredients from spicy pork to tongue, cheek meat, tripe, fish, chicken and goat. I'd also like to try the enchiladas and the camarones a la diabla (hot and spicy shrimp). Based on one excellent meal here, I'd bet the rest of the menu contains plenty good to eat.

Note: Cancun is closed Wednesdays.

Cancun is a modest restaurant on Lewis, a bit warm inside this early evening in mid-summer. Small and family-owned, it claims to be authentic but I recently moved from San Diego and the food here seems rather "Americanized" to me. I first read about Cancun on the Roadfood website.

The nachos were good and they were served in a large portion. I got the enchilada combo: one sour cream chicken, one chile verde chicken,
one shredded beef, served with rice and beans. These were made with quite small tortillas, and the meat filling was sparse.

Dane got the huge super burrito: a 12-inch flour tortilla filled with rice and beans and carne asada (skirt steak), covered with salsa and shredded cheese and topped with guacamole and sour cream. He was quite pleased, although it compared unfavorably to the version from one of our standby places back in San Diego.

Overall, this can't be the best Mexican restaurant in Tulsa, and although I did like the waitress a lot, I don't think I'll be back anytime soon.
