"A market like no other" is how the West Point Market bills itself; and you can take that to the bank. Originally opened seventy years ago, it has become an amazing grocery store with a huge array of hard-to-find products, a beautiful seafood market, prime butcher shop, florist, chocolatier and kitchenware department. Ceilings are low, lighting is soft, room tone is quiet. Shopping here is visiting a gourmet boutique – nothing like a trip to a garish supermarket.

Among the treasures of the West Point Market is Beside the Point Cafe, a small eatery with a large menu of very interesting meals. We originally came early in the morning with our sights set on real Belgian waffles (made in irons imported from Liege), but sad to say the real Belgians are history. Still, you can get a good hot breakfast or, better yet, go back to the bakery area and buy yourself a glorious sticky bun, croissant or killer brownie to bring back to the cafe to have with excellent coffee or espresso.

Lunchtime meals include a crabcake BLT, a hot Cuban sandwich made with Nueske's ham and Tony Packo pickles, chicken and bean burritos made with wonderful guacamole, and chicken pot pie.
