It's a tooth-and-taste buds thrill to bite into the taut natural casing on a Jaynie's hot dog and feel the skin snap. Inside is luxuriously fatty meat -- high-quality, but not in any way gourmet. The dog comes nestled in a Stop 'N' Shop bun and topped with a wide choice of condiments from ketchup and mustard to barbecue sauce and sauerkraut.
While the hot dogs are plain and fine in their plebeian way, you can get a little fancier and order a red hot. This is a pepper-saturated tube steak that is boiled then split and grilled. While it doesn't have the wicked snap of a regular hot dog, it does have a fine crustiness.
Hot dogs are the specialite de la maison, but Jaynie's also offers hamburgers, nachos, tacos and fried balogna sandwiches. There are no fry baskets, so side dishes are limited to bags of chips.
What a happy little place! Jaynie told me that she started in the hot dog business a few years ago with a cart on Route 7 in Danbury. After that, she bought a big former Fedex truck and installed a complete kitchen. But that was too much, so she downsized to her current vehicle, which used to be a landscaping truck. Dining facilities here consist of a single picnic table with an umbrella. Between customers, Jaynie took the time to step out of her kitchen and sit with me at the table to talk weenies.
Note: there is no phone number, and no absolute guarantee Jaynie's will be at the corner of Miry Brook Road and Spruce Mountain Road on any given day. It usually is here from spring through December.
