Joe T. Garcia's

Joe T's is a legendary restaurant, the place in Fort Worth to feast on giant portions of good Tex-Mex chow from an era before Tex-Mex was fashionable. Located in a neighborhood on the north side of Fort Worth, not far from where the stockyards used to be, it is a white house, trimmed in green, that looks like it is about to cave in. Since it opened in 1935 it has been expanded many times, and now the various dining areas, indoors and out, are an incomprehensible sprawl with seating for 1000.

Wherever you sit, you will eat and drink well. Joe T’s Tex-Mex meals are dished out family-style with mess hall efficiency. At dinner time, there is little choice on the menu. You get either the traditional dinner, which includes chips and salsa, nachos, enchiladas, tacos, guacamole, rice and refried beans and a pile of tortillas; or you can go for fajitas – chicken or beef – that come with tortillas, guacamole, pico de gallo sauce and beans. These are big, mighty big meals; and at lunch, more modest options include simpler plates of chilies rellenos, flautas rolled around chicken or beef, and tamales. Weekend brunches include migas (eggs scrambled with shredded tortillas), menudo (tripe stew), and huevos rancheros. Whatever you choose, it comes fast and furious, to the music of clattering pots and pans if you are seated in a room anywhere near the roaring kitchen.

My family had dinner at Joe T's Saturday night and it was, without a doubt, one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had. I grew up eating in this restaurant and those are some of my fondest memories. I have family visiting from New York and really wanted to introduce my new sister-in-law to fantastic Mexican food. My husband and I both insisted on Joe T's. We were so excited to take her and show her what delicious Mexican food was. What a joke!

We had a group of 15: seven adults and six children. We were seated very quickly and served chips, salsa, and drinks almost immediately. This was wonderful. Then it all went downhill. The stale chips tasted like they'd been sitting out overnight, and then were quickly warmed in the microwave. I was hoping it was just my basket of chips, but it was every basket on the table.

One end of our table had no plates or silverware. When we asked our server, Morgan, for more, we were told they were on there way, but they never showed up. Two children ran out of their drinks and we asked for more, but they never showed up. Our meal was served, or thrown onto the table, and Morgan walked away.

We had nachos at one end of the table that couldn't be served to everyone because half of our table had no plates! The same thing happened with our tacos. The enchiladas and fajitas were set out, but those who ordered extra cheese and sour cream didn't get any. There were so many peppers in the fajitas that they tasted candy sweet. The nachos were covered in mounds of grease, so much that my seven-year-old got sick from eating them.

At this point we were starving and didn't care, so we dug in and ate. Unfortunately, I had no drink. I asked Morgan, our server, for a refill of water and drinks for the table and she said okay. At least 10 minutes passed with nothing, so I asked again. Another 10 minutes and nothing. I asked again (and pointed out that I'd been waiting for well over 10 minutes) and she found a spare glass of water on the bar behind our table and slammed it down next to me. We had a few questions about how the check was broken down, but Morgan couldn't be bothered with helping us as she was busy leaning against a wall. Disgusted, we paid and left.

I realize that this restaurant will be busy at 7pm on a Saturday night. I do not think that excuses the service or experience we had. I assume since Morgan knew that a group of 15 would have a gratuity automatically added to the bill, she decided it wasn't worth her time to actually serve us. I realize we were a large group, but all we wanted were enough plates, silverware, and filled drinks so we could eat our dinner. But, apparently, asking for that caused a hissy fit and Morgan felt it was necessary to slam drinks down to let us know how unreasonable we were.

We spent $201.10 for dinner; $26.73 of that was a tip that was completely undeserved. Our server, Morgan, was awful. Maybe she was having an off night. Maybe something about our group rubbed her the wrong way. I don't know what the problem was, but the way we were treated was inexcusable. I could be okay knowing that we received bad service at your restaurant, but I had family visiting and there I draw the line. I am so embarrassed by how we were treated because we told our sister-in-law how wonderful this restaurant was. We looked stupid to her. I'll never return to Joe T's. It's not worth it to me to risk being treated so poorly.

Michael, you forgot to mention that Joe T likes cash on the barrelhead! He does supply ATMs for a hefty fee. That annoyance aside, la comida es generosa, pero asi asi ("so so"), but eating on their huge shaded patio is a treat. For that reason alone we will return (with cash!).
