Snowflake Ice Cream
1148 West Main Street

As a child, trips out to the North Fork of Long Island always included a stop at this landmark, which has been here since the early 1950's. I was happily surprised when years later I found the same place still there. I was even more surprised when the ice cream still lived up to my happy memories.
As the web site indicates, Snowflake changed owners in the late 1980's, but if anything, the new owners made the place better. The ice cream is still homemade, and there are always flavors you won't find anywhere else. There is hard and soft ice cream, and while the soft serve has limited flavor options, there is always a unique soft serve option. On my most recent trip, the soft serve flavor was pistachio and it was outstanding! When have you ever had pistachio soft serve???
The choices are very broad, with old style ice cream sodas and super thick shakes, and a variety of sundae choices that is unparalleled in this area... at least since NY landmark Jahn's closed years back. Seating is on one of the many benches surrounding the shop, or in or on your car. Snowflake used to be primarily a warm weather stop, but they are open all year now.
If you find yourself on eastern Long Island, make sure you don't pass this roadside classic. The owners clearly have a passion for what they do, and one bite of their treats will make that point quite clear. I mean, what other ice cream shop has a link to a story on "The Chemistry and Thermodynamics of Ice Cream!"
