Sahagún - Portland, OR

Attention, chocolate lovers! If it is possible for eating to induce full body-and-soul rapture, here is the place. What Elizabeth Montes makes is insanely delicious, not to mention just plain beautiful. Her hot chocolate is thick, dense, and supremely satisfying, sweet but not cloying, the soothing and exciting essence of pure chocolate.

It takes chocolatier Elizabeth Montes a short while to brew this amazing hot chocolate. It is pure, thick, intense, a pleasure for its physical gravity as well as its vibrant chocolate flavor.

"Chocolate-covered cocoa nibs are tiny and instantly addictive. The label in the candy case says "Chocolate Santande -- Colombian chocolate, Colombian nibs." Whatever exactly that means, these dark, vivid nuggets will spoil you for any other small-size chocolate snack."

Yes, this is the place, even though it doesn't have a big sign outside. The interior is tiny, but there is a short window bench and a few stools for sitting and sipping hot chocolate from a china cup.

In addition to the exalted hot chocolate, Sahagun offers a few other beverages -- espressos and lattes, and, the day we visited, these very appealing cool refreshers.
