Johnson's Corner

2842 SE Frontage Rd., Loveland, CO - (970) 667-2069

Johnson's Corner is famous for its cinnamon roll, a monumentally-sized piece of pastry that fills out a dinner plate. It arrives warm and smothered with sweet, white icing, accompanied by buttery spread. It's definitely the most number of calories for the least amount of money ($2.25), but it does tend to get a little monotonous after you've ingested the first half-pound of dough. For a more balanced rib-sticking breakfast, you cannot beat chicken-fried steak, here served with all the suitable complements: eggs as you like them, a large patty of crisp-fried hash browns, a biscuit (nondescript) and, of course, plenty of thick cream gravy.

In addition to all the usual breakfast items, Johnson's Corner menu offers buffalo sausage and burritos. For lunch, supper, and any time around the clock, you can order a pot roast dinner, a hot turkey sandwich, steaks, pork chops, or burgers. A full-service soda fountain offers shakes, floats, malts, and one heck of a handsome banana split.

A truck drivers' haven since 1952, Johnson's Corner is a full-service highway oasis including fuel pumps, convenience store, truckers' showers, and an adjoining chapel featuring regular services geared towards travelin' men and women. Recently remodeled, the dining area offers hugely spacious booths and counter service. And for travelers who want to stay connected, it is Wi-Fi hot spot.

As a truck driver I know this place well. Stay away, I've eaten here twice and been burned both times.

Everyone always mentions the sweet roll. I was expecting something extraordinary, but I must say I was disappointed. Compared the the cinnamon rolls at a bakery (like the ones I got when I was a kid at the Jersey Shore), the Johnson's Corner rolls are a B- or C+; basically, a big piece of dough covered with icing.

The size is impressive, but the character much less so. Where are the rings of cinnamon sugar between the layers? No raisins? Just a basic sugar glaze? Save the calories. Go to a good bakery for a great cinnamon roll.
