Cherokee Dining on 12th Avenue

The best thing about a meal at Cherokee Dining is a waitress named Shar. Outspoken in the extreme, this hearty gal can keep multiple conversations going with customers and staff, giving all an equal-opportunity hard-time as she does. She offers her opinion on everything you order, accused me of pilfering my credit card from a homeless man on the street (all in good fun), and evaluates how well you did as an eater.

In our case, we did not eat as well as we wanted to because some of the dishes were not up to snuff. Especially the breads. Cherokee's famous "braised bread" that accompanies many breakfasts here turned out to be a couple of lengths of soulless French bread brushed with butter and broiled until lightly toasty. If the bread was good, so would its braised incarnation; but this stuff was boring. Nor were we impressed by the "fresh-baked" pumpkin bread, which tasted like something made from a boxed mix. On the other hand, honey wheat hotcakes were nearly elegant and had a full-flavored tang that was nicely complemented by the sweet syrup provided.

Cherokee specializes in big skillet breakfasts that are mish-mashes of multiple ingredients piled atop fried potatoes. I very much liked my "cop shop" of potatoes, bacon, sausage, mushrooms, melted cheese, and pico de gallo topped with a couple of over-easy fried eggs.

Best oatmeal ever and Shar is a hoot. Only place where you can order it and get a ration of s*** on the side at no extra charge. Restaurant does serve alcohol and does take reservations. Political hangout for city and state pols, cops, lawyers, etc. Great place for breakfast: quiet + Shar. Decorations at Christmas by sister DeeAnna are incredible and worth a visit in themselves.
