Schmucker's

2103 North Reynolds Road, Toledo, OH - (419) 535-9116

Schmucker's is just off the Ohio Turnpike (I-80/90), five miles north on US-20 (exit 58 on the Turnpike). A classic diner with lots of chrome, a large counter, a mechanical cash register and an old telephone booth, it is definitely worth the short side trip. Despite its age (Schmucker's opened in 1948) it is clean and well-maintained.

Breakfast offers the usual diner fare, such as steak and eggs and home fries with just the right combination of soft and hard textures. The coffee is strong and hot. A highlight are the flaky biscuits and creamy gravy. You can add chicken to this dish for a real stick-to-your-ribs experience. Other lunch and dinner specialties include the meatloaf platter, fried bologna sandwich, cheeseburger, and fish fillet.

They are justifiably famous for homemade pies, with up to 20 varieties. Slices are generous in size and reasonably priced at $2-3. One of the best is cherry walnut, a combination of sweet and savory with a crunchy texture. Other varieties include strawberry rhubarb, chocolate peanut butter, and creamsicle.

Service is attentive and efficient. They also sell mugs and t-shirts featuring their (authentically) retro logo.
