Smok-Shak

I don't know about Fisher's experience, but we LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Smok Shak. Lunch is the best time to go: better waitresses, better food, better experience (although I have been told the steaks offered on Wednesday nights are wonderful).

Anyone who has eaten out knows that if a side (such as fried items) is not included in the list of usual sides for a meal, then that side will cost extra. All you have to do is ask the waitress to be sure. And EVERY meal comes with cobbler at the Smok Shak. We have never been charged extra for it (the pineapple cobbler is the best but they are all fantastic!).

We love the ribs, chicken-fried steak sandwich, baked beans, potato salad, onion rings, and french fries the most. But to be honest, everything we have ever tried has been great. Give the Smok Shak a try!

I live near Ingersoll and we visit the Smok-Shak every now and then, but I now know why their prices are so high! For their Dinner specialties, they offer a choice of two sides (corn, baked beans, cottage cheese, coleslaw). Along with these choices there is a choice of onion rings, hand-cut fries, Suzie Q fries, and okra. This is the catch: be careful when you are ordering off their menu, because all deep-fried foods are $1.59 extra and are not included in the specialties price on the menu, and the menu does not state this.

What should have been a $20.00 meal for two turned into $31.00! Until they make their menu clearer, I will not go back and will be spreading the word all over about their misrepresentations on the menu. Also, if your meal does not include their cobbler dessert, be careful when they offer it. They make it appear as if it is included and then they charge you for it.

We found this little gem when we saw the sign for it in Alva, OK. It is on US-64 in Ingersoll, OK.

Smok-Shak serves beef and pork BBQ and chicken. Very crowded with locals at lunchtime and we can see why. When our beef BBQ sandwich arrived, it was enormous! The beef is chopped fine and is moist and tangy with what tastes like a tomato base sauce; the fresh homemade bun is outstanding (wish other BBQ restaurants paid as much attention to the bread as they do to the meat). You could have your sandwich dressed with "vegetables": lettuce, tomato, onion and pickle. Hushpuppies are different from those served in NC; these are more like soft, mini-corn sticks.

Since we had two dogs in the car, there was no shade at the restaurant, and it was 94 degrees, we opted for take-out, so we did not have a chance to experience table service. The atmosphere is what I call "typical sticky table" or the kind of place that says they know what they're doing. We drove into the town of Cherokee, OK and found a park where we had an impromptu picnic. It's so much fun discovering delicious food on the road!
