Chihuahua Tortilla Factory

On the way to Farmington in the northwest corner of New Mexico, the small town of Bloomfield is the first major sign of civilization on Route 550 after the long drive from the Albuquerque suburbs. After (or before) a day of exploring the sparse beauty of Chaco Canyon, the Chihuahua Tortilla Factory on Route 64, just off of Highway 550, is a welcoming site for those looking for a quick bite or tortillas to take home.

A small counter inside the building offers flour or corn tortillas in any quantity. We were immediately hooked by the huge, five-gallon jug of iced horchata by the front door, but after serving ourselves, we found the cinnamon-laden rice drink too watered down by the melting ice for our taste. The factory also offers their version of New Mexico’s state cookie, the biscochito: crunchy cinnamon-sugar disks, mildly flavored with anise. These cookies tasted doughier than others that we tried but no less sweet.

We packed our tortillas for the journey home, and they froze well, too. Even after a month in the freezer in their original wrapper, each tortilla still had that homemade floury feel and a thickness that withstood our chunkiest, wettest stuffings for quesadillas and burritos. Though there are many prepackaged tortillas to choose from in the larger New Mexico grocery stores, we considered ourselves lucky to have happened upon such a delicious product that supports local business.

I was traveling through Bloomfield for work, but when I saw the sign for the Chihuahua Tortilla Factory it stopped me in my tracks. Being someone who is always up for adventure, I was just hoping for a factory tour. I had no idea it was also a restaurant or was even open to the public. The people were so nice. They showed me the operation, and they agreed to make me lunch at 9:30 in the morning. I'm not from New Mexico. I had no idea what to order, so I stuck with something safe. A burrito. When I sat down at the table, I was served chips and salsa. That red salsa blew me away. It is made, I'm certain, with fresh New Mexico chilis. I thought I would lick the bowl. The burrito was standard fare, but once smothered in that salsa, well, I savored every bite of that meal. I would drive 50 miles to eat there again, but I don't have access to this kind of food in Illinois. Locals might feel differently, but for me it was definitely a rare treat! I would return. Bloomfield doesn't have much to offer but they do have this!
