If you love bakery stuff this is your place. Some of my favorites include key lime bread pudding, the homemade berry French toast, and the special-order chocolate ganache cake ($50) but so worth it if you have a family. Great for breakfast or lunch. I also like the chicken curry salad for something with a little zing in it for lunch. They have indoor and outdoor seating. Singe made our wedding cake and she is known for her cakes and breads.

Anyone familiar with Hilton Head Island understands that in an effort to preserve the character of the island, the town fathers have made finding any business establishment literally a game of “hide and seek.” And finding Signe’s is no exception. The sign on Arrow Road is modest in the extreme and the building itself seems more like a professional office than one that would host a gourmet bakery on the first floor. But for the visitor who perseveres (I used my GPS and had no trouble) and stops by for breakfast or lunch the journey will be very well rewarded. Signe (that is the owner’s name) started the bakery in 1972 and has been impressing locals and visitors now for 35 years.

The bakery serves breakfast, cold and hot sandwiches, quiches, tarts, salads, and a large array of freshly baked breads, cakes, and pies. No alcohol is served but there is a wide selection of coffees, teas, cappuccino, latte, and juices. The deep-dish French toast trio (blueberry, blackberry, and regular) is superb, and the homemade corned beef hash Sunrise boasts lots of tender corned beef and perfectly cooked poached eggs. The accompanying toasted 8-grain bread is so good that we bought a loaf to take with us for our trip home the following day. Breakfast comes with a side of fresh fruit. Coffee is full-roasted and always fresh.

Place your order at the counter, then find a table. When your order is ready they somehow find you amid the other happy patrons. In season there is also outdoor seating. For a visitor to Hilton Head Island, Signe's is a breakfast or lunch treat.
