Visitors to Austin are well-advised to go to Threadgill's for the simple reason that it is there, and that is a good thing. It is where good food and music meet. This is important in Austin.
You come in through the back where you are greeted by their familiar "Howdy Stranger" sign. The main dining room is spacious, but if every table on the floor is filled, there are two more on stage, flanking the sides. You too, can be a star.
The real star is the food itself, and the chicken-fried steak is the featured attraction. Mine was presented with the cream gravy napping the upper crust of a good-sized portion. It was pretty good, but the crust flaked off, separating from the meat, and I had to add salt and pepper.
Their vegetables are popular and previous comments here about them ring true. You can make a meal out of the side dishes and they are offered and priced accordingly on the menu. You can have a choice of two sides; I had the broccoli florets along with red beans and rice. The broccoli was previously frozen but cooked lightly and served still crisp, with a lemon wedge. I added S&P. The beans and rice were perfectly fine.
Threadgill's is a necessary place to visit. They feature many other dishes that belong in a music hall. Not everything is fried. Have something from their grill. There is a good selection of burgers, steaks, and more.
