Round Rock Donuts

Stephen Rushmore, who is one of the savviest Roadfood people I know, loves Round Rock Donuts. I was skeptical at first, being an aficionado of the heavier cake donuts more popular in New England. Over time, I've come to appreciate the Round Rock style -- not just appreciate it, but crave it! It makes me understand people's passion for airy Krispy Kremes, although in my opinion, KK isn't even in the same league. I particularly like the handsome plain glazed ones with their healthy yellow hue, especially when utterly fresh. They are so much more substantial than the evaporative Krispy Kreme, yet not the least bit heavy like the more dunkable cake donuts that are my personal inamorati. The balance between glaze and dough is ideal: sweet enough to disallow sugar in one's coffee and doughy enough so that a mere three or four is quite a satisfying breakfast.

When the Roadfood.com eating tour left Austin and stopped in Round Rock for our pre-meat sugar fix, I was even more impressed by the "pig in a blanket" at Round Rock than by the donuts. Like central Texas's ubiquitous kolache, it had a tender, sweet dough that beautifully complements a sausage inside, especially if it's the hot jalapeno version with cheese.
