Trudy and I were driving from Salem, Oregon to McMinneville when road closures and detours led us to Amity. When we saw a sign for the Brigittine Monastery we were curious enough to drive the three miles. The monastery is located among a stunning circle of oaks. The Brigittine Order was founded in Sweden around 1100. It was revived in California in 1976 and moved to Oregon's Willamette Valley in 1987.
They support themselves by selling a variety of rich and delicious fudges. Pecan Praline, Chocolate Royale and Hazelnut Chocolate all sell between $8 and $10 a pound. The candy is made on site from quality ingredients. It is fresh and smooth, with a bittersweet and nutty crunch. The flavors are wonderful. It's a sweet indulgence if you are driving to the Oregon Coast or touring the Yamhill County wine country.
You ring a doorbell at the monastery headquarters, where a friendly monk will greet you and offer free samples. The monks answer questions (there is no vow of silence), but will not pose for photos. They have a beautiful chapel built from donated pieces.
The fudge is also available online.
