A big, juicy cheeseburger is high on my list of life's pleasures; a cheeseburger with good French fries and a chocolate shake is bliss. So there is no need to explain why, when I found out that there is a restaurant named Burgers, Shakes & Fries not too far from home, I was on my way. Kory Wollins, who opened the 20-seat eat shack late in 2007, said that his goal was to provide a quality burger, fries and shake, plus change, for a $10 bill. That's pricey compared to what you get at the McChains, but these hamburgers are not junk food. Grill-cooked using daily-ground 82% lean beef, they are large, succulent, and full-flavored, cooked to rosy-pink medium-rare unless you specify differently. Instead of buns, BS&F uses slabs of thick toast that are buttered and grilled to add extra savor. A single 1/3-pound patty is slightly unwieldy; a double is an eating challenge, especially if you pile on the extras, which range from four kinds of cheese and all known condiments to bacon, chili, and a fried egg.

French fries have crisp edges and chewy skin, but are thick enough to deliver plenty of soft, spuddy satisfaction within. Alas, BS&F was out of its day's special milk shake, salted caramel, when I arrived; but I had chocolate, and it was swell: thick enough to demand serious sucking on a straw.

The restaurant is minuscule, with only a handful of counter seats and a line of people waiting to place orders and pick up to-gos. While it is not instantaneous fast food, it is fast enough to make this an ideal quick stop for anyone traveling along I-95 in southwesternmost Connecticut who wants an excellent easy-off, easy-on burger-eating experience.

Our last stop in a week full of amazing and not-so-great Roadfood. Didn't expect such a small place, but we were there at an off-hour so we got good seats at the tall bar.

The cheeseburgers were juicy, cooked exactly as ordered (medium, and medium-rare), and the grilled toast held up nicely to the meat, cheese, and condiments (I'm an old fan of the "Friendly's set-up" on grilled white bread that they no longer offer). Fries were above average, and I didn't get to taste Tim's milkshake, but he liked it.

Weird thing about ordering: they don't collect your money until you are done eating. When we finished there was a big line waiting to order, so we were hanging there with empty trays/paper garbage just waiting to pay; not an efficient system at all. Thankfully the guy behind the counter saw us after about eight minutes and took our money before he took any new orders.

Overall a very tasty burger experience!
