On a recent stopat the Circus Drive-In, I had a craving for an old-fashioned hamburger with a side of their famous krinkle-cut fries and a thick chocolate shake. As always, I make it a point to arrive early, before the noon lunch crowds arrive. This time though, I chose to seat myself at a table instead of my usual spot at the well-kept lunch counter.

Service was prompt, as it always is, and the high school girls manning the tables and counter, and drive-in (sans roller skates), were already in position for the noon rush. The Circus is very popular with area businessmen who stop in for a quick bite.

The Circus has two burger styles: a quarter-pounder that looks twice the size of your standard MacDonald's slab of beef and a robust half-pounder at a bargain $6.39 including fries, onion rings, and a nice portion of coleslaw. The burger came out 10 minutes after ordering; everything is cooked to order to ensure freshness.

After enjoying my burger and fries, I opted for the "Merry-Go-Round" (I guess I am still a kid at heart), which consists of a large scoop of ice cream (vanilla bean in this case) smothered with hot fudge and topped with whipped cream and a cherry. What closes the deal for most kids are the five or six Animal Crackers that surround the edges for a carousel effect. If that isn't enough, they add on a little cocktail paper toothpick umbrella to give it a roof. I see many kids stare at it for minutes before they take their first bite.

For any New Yorker or Philadelphian heading to the Jersey Shore beaches, there's nothing to compare with a lunch stop at the Circus Drive-In in Wall Township. Located on route 35 in New Jersey's Monmouth County, the Circus is always in town during the summer months.
