Buttercup Bakery

39010 Highway 299, Willow Creek, CA - (530) 629-3880

I did not have high expectations of eating well in the fairly remote town of Willow Creek, California, about an hour east of the coast's Redwood Forest. But the burgundy-colored Washington State cherries I scored at the local grocery for dinner (in July) were at the peak of snapping-fresh flavor; and in the morning I stopped in the Buttercup Bakery, which turned out to be a nice find. No ordinary small-town bakery, it doesn't just sell coffee and pastry to locals and to the fishermen and river rafters who pass through this idyllic Northern California town known as the Bigfoot Capital of the World. It appears also to be an ad hoc gathering place for concerned citizens of the left-leaning variety, its bookcase home to a collection of politically correct non-fiction (as well as DVDs and CDs for sale), its grocery shelves stocked with organic juices and counter culture teas.

Whatever one's reaction to the social attitude, it would be hard not to like the big square of warm, spicy pumpkin bread cut to order at 8am when the bakery opened, as well as the puffy, crunch-crusted cheese roll. Buttercup's lunch menu features wraps and sandwiches on fresh-baked rolls, including a "veggie roll" of hummus, avocado, carrots, fresh greens, and mustard sauce.
