I grew up in Warren County, and have lived in the northwest New Jersey area for nearly 45 years and I NEVER ATE AT CHARLIE'S POOL ROOM! I corrected this egregious error in my dining behavior recently, chowing down on three mealies, further sustained by tales told by John Fencz, who was in the middle of a story about how the local health inspector almost shut the place down in 1993, when I had to leave, over two hours into my visit. I will be back very soon to again savor Grandma Fencz's secret sauce and the bite of those hot pepper slices, bringing a friend.

This place is a must!

Charlie's has been in business for at least 20 years now. I remember going as a kid and I'm now 34. The place was awesome then and it is awesome now. The word awesome is overused. People use it to decribe anything and everything nowadays. Winning the lottery... twice... is awesome. Coming home from work and going into my bedroom and seeing Britney Spears lying on my bed naked with a note from my wife saying, "Have a good time." That is awesome. Going to Charlie's Pool Room for hot dogs is astoundingly, freakin' awesome!

The two brothers are so nice. The place is a classic. The dogs could quite possibly be the best in the world. They should enter them in a contest.

When I think of Roadfood, I think about unique food prepared by equally unique people. And after reading about Charlie's Pool Room, I just had to get there. I was not disappointed.

I was greeted at the door by Joe Fencz who gave me a brief rundown of their hot dog menu and introduced me to his brother John. John headed to the kitchen to prepare my three "Mealies" and Joe and I sat down and got acquainted. I told him that I got his name from Roadfood.com and he started to rattle off the names and hometowns of all the fine people who have made the trip to Charlie's Pool Room. Joe has an unbelievable memory. He told me he stopped gambling when he was 28 years old, but I think he could count cards in Vegas. Its nice to see good things happen to good people. Joe told me that they were just about out of business a few years ago but thanks to the Internet their business is thriving.

Now on to the food. I don't know if it was just the food or a combination of the food, the atmosphere, and the company, but I have never had a hot dog better than my "Mealies" at Charlie's Pool Room. I can't wait to get back and enjoy the food and conversation.

(Mealies are hot dogs topped with Hungarian sauce, onions, and hot peppers.)
