H&R Sweet Shop

102 Royall Ave., Mt. Pleasant, SC - (843) 884-2118

Do not come to the H&R Sweet Shop ravening for sugar. Sweets are minimal: a few candy bars and some bottles of flavored syrup that are poured over cups of ice. Do come with an appetite for lunch. Daily specials include fried pork chops or chicken served with okra soup, steamed cabbage, or lima beans; and every weekday you can come to the little diner for beautifully fried local shrimp, gigantic chicken wings, and crusty, free-form hamburgers. The flavors are Lowcountry soul, which means lots of pigmeat in the beans and greens, red rice to accompany Friday's fish, and brown rice to go with Monday's baked turkey wing. Tea, of course, is double-sweet.

A Mt. Pleasant institution since 1946, H&R is a joyful place with plenty of chatter in the cramped rear dining room between regular customers and the staff of two (he's in the kitchen; she's behind the counter, taking orders and serving them). Many people come for take-out meals, but if you choose to eat here, lunch is presented on a crockery plate with a fork wrapped in a paper napkin. Background music is easy-listening lounge soul performed by the likes of Billy Holliday and Lou Rawls. Décor includes pictures of such African-American heroes as Martin Luther King, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and James Brown.

Service isn't lightning-fast; every meal is made when ordered; and the cook, who happens to be the most dapper chef de cuisine we've ever met (see photo), cannot help but come forth into the dining area for a little jovial give-and-take with folks he knows as well as with newcomers.

The highlight of our weekend trip. Walk in and order 'the special', which for us was fried shrimp, shark steak, and something else good.
Fish was excellent. The rice was just OK.

The sweet tea is worth driving 2 hours to have. We spent a good portion of the drive home trying to figure out how he does it.
