Doumar’s Cones & Barbecue

1919 Monticello Ave., Norfolk, VA - (757) 627-4163

Doumar’s of Norfolk is marked by a sign with two big ice cream cones on either side, a reminder that Abe Doumar, the founder, invented the ice cream cone. You can still get your ice cream served in a freshly-made waffle cone, but before dessert, this is a great place to eat cheeseburgers and hot dogs, as well as peppery pork barbecue sandwiches, served with cole slaw inside the bun.

If cone’s aren’t your passion, another ice cream treat worth knowing about is Doumar’s Reggie, which is a milk shake that is enriched with pieces of waffle cone. Chocolate is the preferred flavor for Reggies, but you can also have raspberry or vanilla. Also on the menu are such soda fountain arcana as a June Bride, which is that’s chocolate ice cream topped with strawberry sauce; a Scope (vanilla ice cream and orange sherbet topped with hot fudge sauce; and a Kingston Flat (strawberry shortcake with bananas). Milk shakes are excellent, too.

This classic drive-in fare is served by veteran car hops in old-fashioned drive-in style: dine off trays hung on the half-rolled-down window of your car.

A real greasy spoon! May have been good 30 years ago but on a scale of 1 to 10, I'd rate it a 2. Never tasted BBQ that bad.
