Bread Garden Bakery

2912 Domingo Ave., Berkeley, CA - (510) 548-3122

There is no place to sit down and eat at the Bread Garden, which is a mid-1970s bakery across the street from the old Claremont Hotel in Berkeley. That's OK with me. I had a fine time standing on the sidewalk enjoying some of the most delicious breakfast pastries I've encountered anywhere, including a croissant and a sticky bun and, most wondrous of all, the San Francisco area treat known as a morning bun. That's a muffin-shaped pastry made of the most fragile dough and swirled with cinnamon.

It is also a joy to browse inside, and if I ever have a place to stay for a while in or around Berkeley, I want to bring home malted barley sourdoughs, the Sunday potato-onion loaf, what's billed as a "19th century baguette," and three-seed rye. The plenteous menu also includes a full roster of cookies, brownies, tarts and scones, and even cookies made especially for dogs.
