Leo's

Even if you don't think Leo's makes the best cheese steak in Philadelphia (as do many loyalists), there can be little doubt that it makes the biggest: over half a yard of Amoroso Bakery Italian bread laden with pounds of beef and onions all trowel-cut on the griddle into a fine hash and saturated with melted cheese. If you give the management two days notice so the bread can be baked, you can get hoagies that are three or six feet long.

Steaks are available with mushrooms or pizza sauce, with or without cheese, or in the hoagie configuration, meaning lettuce and tomato added, but there is no improving on the classic configuration of meat and cheese and onions, plus a scattering of peppers and pickles to add a bit of sparkle.

Leo's offers no indoor seating. It's just a counter where you place your order and can watch the grill man cook it. Picnic tables are provided outside.

I've been following Roadfood write-ups for almost 30 years. It had to happen sooner or later: This is the first time I've been disappointed. The Philadelphia area does not have a shortage of great cheesesteak joints (or mediocre ones for that matter). Most of them use Amoroso rolls (as does Leo's), so the difference is in the fixin's. The steak was dry and way over-cooked. Too much steak and too little cheese: The flavor ratio was way off. I had the cheese steak hoagie and the lettuce, tomato and onions were also over-whelmed (and smothered). The lettuce added no crunch or contrast to the steak.
