About an hour south of Dallas at the end of the Exit 353 ramp off I-35, is a 24/7 source of good kolaches. The Czech Stop, which also is a gas station, has only a single table in the bakery part of the operation and a few more in the adjoining convenience shop. But if accommodations are minimal, the pastry selection is cornucopic. Of course, kolaches star. The little 2x2 sweet-dough pastries are here available in more than a dozen variations including traditional poppyseed, apricot, prune, and cheese as well as the kolache variant known as a klobasnik, which is the sweet dough baked around a chunk of smoky sausage.

A full-service bakery, the Czech stop also makes strudels, doughnuts, pies, pound cakes, and loaves of bread. The edible repertoire even includes jars of pickled pigs feet and pickled eggs set out along the counter where customers stand in line to place their order. For kolache-frowners on the go who want to hop off the interstate and get back on, there are ready-made sandwiches on Czech Stop bread: pimiento cheese, corned beef, egg salad, etc. If you're really in a hurry, you can call ahead to have your order bagged and ready to go.

Deceptively kitsch-looking gas station nestled between a drive-in burger chain and a drive-thru chicken stand, this quaint little bakery is famous for their traditional Czech pastries and freshly made goods. Well worth the stop when heading between DFW and Austin.
