We found out about Bloedow Bakery thanks to Roadfood.com tipster Vanessa Haluska, who directed us to a house specialty, the peanut butter roll. It's a big, circular pastry made with sweet dough and swirled with peanut butter where you might expect cinnamon. For P.B. lovers it is a very large taste of heaven; and so we salute Vanessa, who described this charming place as "the best small town bakery that I have ever visited!"

Peanut butter rolls are only one of the dozens of delights to be found at this vintage bake shop, which also makes superior glazed and cake donuts, sweet rolls, maple-frosted long johns, and cookies.

Local foodlore says that six years ago, Krispy Kreme came to town, setting up its products in groceries and convenience stores. But the interloper donuts did not impress Minnesotans who knew better. In less than two years, KK had vanished from the shelves and Bloedow reigned supreme.

Since I was a kid visiting my grandparents, who lived in Winona at the time, I have always made it a point to stop here when I'm in town. Just about everything at Bloedow Bakery is awesome: fantastic cookies, donuts, bread, cakes, pies, and more. Honestly, I've never had a bad experience, and I always return to the Twin Cities with boxes of cookies for friends and coworkers. WCCO Twin Cities named Bloedow Bakery the best bakery in Minnesota in 2012. I concur.

My parents grew up going to Bloedow's. I spent my summers as a child in Winona, then went to Winona State University. After about 20 years of marriage my husband and I were going through Winona at a time that they were open. He tasted one raised glazed and demanded,"Why haven't you brought me here before? No wonder Krispy Kreme went out of business in Winona!" He made sure we stopped on our way back a few days later.

The entire building looks as it has for 75 years. The breads sit on the angled wall racks waiting to be sliced when they are purchased. All of their products are amazing. The raised glazed doughnuts are light as a feather and so fresh that the glaze makes a faint crunch in your mouth to let you know you are getting into something wonderful.
