Scup's In The Harbor

256 Marginal Street, Boston, MA - (617) 569-7287

I am delighted to find another true New England hotdog in the city of Boston. Believe it or not, they are a rare find in Beantown. The distinguishing attribute of this regional variety is a crustless buttered bun toasted on top of a griddle. The hotdog, which I believe is a Kayem brand, is grilled so it has snappiness when you puncture the natural casing. Several mustard, relish and onion varieties are available as toppings.

While located in a non-descript brick building in the heart of a shipyard, Scup’s in the Harbor has the feeling of a neighborhood café. Orders are placed at a small counter where you can peek into the kitchen, and tables are community style so you can make friends or nonchalantly spy on the gossip of other patrons. After finishing your meal, you go back to the ordering counter where they will retrieve your meal ticket to settle the bill. It is refreshing to see an honor system existing in an urban restaurant.

Scup’s serves more than hotdogs. In fact, they are most renowned for breakfast, which I did not sample, but will be doing so in the near future. Other items on the never-the-same menu included BLT’s, empanada’s, tuna melts, and vegetable sandwich – all which looked incredibly fresh.
