Strickland's

1809 Triplett Blvd., Akron, OH - (866) 478-7425
The eggless custard is dense, thick and full-flavored; minimum air is pumped into it. If custard had muscles, Stickland's would be buff indeed. Plain chocolate and vanilla are both well-nigh perfect. Go for a turtle sundae or banana split, and maybe try a flavor of the day.

If you look closely, you can see small bits of banana in this large fresh banana custard cone. Strickland's sure doesn't cheat you on the portion size!

The dense, low-overrun vanilla served by Strickland's reminds us of the very similar custard served at our beloved Ridgefield Ice Cream Shop in Connecticut.

At times, the cones come out in really odd shapes, like this black raspberry chunk cone.

Smooth and creamy and nearly fudgy – but not cloyingly so – Strickland's chocolate is Fourth-of-July good.

Strickland's has plenty of flavors available for taking home with you. I took home a pint of the grape and another pint of black raspberry chunk.

When we visited in May, 2006, Strickland's was touting an appearance by the Hall-of-Fame Cleveland Indian pitcher Bob Feller, who was a Major League rookie in 1936 – the same year Strickland's opened for business.

This classic-looking drive-in is within sight of the Akron airport, where the immense hangar for the Goodyear Blimp is located.

While some Strickland's shops close for the winter, the one in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio is open year round.
