Beside the Point Cafe

1711 W. Market St., Akron, OH - (330) 864-2151
Among the treasures of the West Point Market is Beside the Point Cafe, a small eatery with a large menu of very interesting meals. Lunchtime features a crabcake BLT, a hot Cuban sandwich made with Nueske's ham and Tony Packo pickles, and plum-glazed chicken salad. Espresso is excellent.

The name says it all: Killer Brownie. It is layers of dense chocolate and thick caramel with chopped walnuts and dark chocolate chips. This is the classic Killer Brownie. West Point Market's bakery also offers such variations as the Killer Blondie, the Peanut Butter Krazie and the Chocolate Raspberry Suicide.

It can be surprising to find such a good Cuban sandwich up north; they serve an excellent one here. High-quality bread and meat are used, but what really makes it memorable are the hot pickles from Tony Packo's in Toledo.

In addition to the regular repertoire of Killer Brownies, the West Point Market offers specialty variations every week.

Fresh and yeasty, loaded with crisp nuts and caramelized sugar, this is the creme de la creme of sticky buns.

Raspberry Suicide is the name of this insanely rich version of the killer brownie.

All the restaurants around Akron that serve Barberton chicken accompany it with spicy red rice. West Point Market's version is superb.

A unique specialty of Akron, the sauerkraut ball is a tongue-teasing hors d'oeuvre: crunchy with moist, tangy insides.

What the West Point Market bakery bills as a Russian Tea Cake reminded us of a gigantic ruggelah. It may indeed be a tea cake, but it was great with the cafe's excellent espresso.
