Standard Baking Company - Portland, ME

For bread-lovers, it's heaven. Beyond baguettes, boules, rye, 5-grain and rustic loaves, the aromatic ovens produce feather-light croissants, luxurious little pains au chocolat, biscotti, brioches, and galettes. Coffee is available, and there are a few tables for sitting and enjoying the bakery treasures while they're still hot.

This sticky-rich morning bun is available without nuts if preferred. The body is light and buttery, the glaze is honey-sweet. With a cup of coffee, it's the sticky bun of the gods.

Bread-central in Portland, and one of the best bakeries we've found anywhere in our travels. Note the chairs in the windows above the door. That's the Fore Street restaurant.

Such a dizzying selection of pastries makes us weak-kneed with desire. Over the course of two mornings, we heroically sampled as many as possible.

Made of fragile croissant dough, this lovely pastry contains a vein of rich, dark chocolate.

Rich, chewy, sweet, nutty and satisfying beyond all measure, we simply tore away at this raisin pecan loaf over the course of a few hours. We suspect it also would be good if sliced, toasted and buttered.
