Canter's

419 North Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles, CA - (323) 651-2030
This vintage Jewish deli is kosher-style, not kosher, meaning you can have potato pancakes with sour cream alongside your excellent corned beef sandwich. Rye bread is superb, soups are motherly. Canter's is open 'round the clock.

Lucky me; I arrived at dawn, when the breakfast specials include an order of matzoh brey (normally, $8.25) plus a cup of coffee ($2.50) for $8.50. I consumed all the sour cream and apple sauce midway through the plate. My waiter was happy to bring me more.

No matter how good the meats, a deli sandwich fails if the bread is inferior. That will not happen at Canter's, where the rye bread is fresh and perfect.

Canter's just after dawn. The cut-off sign on its wall at the far right advertises its Kibitz Room, which has been a favorite haunt of rock musicians in L.A. It features a small stage, and jam sessions apparently still go on late at night.
