Believe it or not some of the best fried chicken I've ever had was at Aunt B's Kitchen in King's Bay on the way to TTF. We used to go there several times a week during our month long visits and never fail to go back to work in the afternoon in a food coma.

The best chicken is always made at home. However, if I'm going to eat chicken at a "fast food" chain restaurant, it's going to be from either Popeye's (spicy) or, Pollo Campero (when you can find one). They're the wonderful Guatemalan chicken chain that's unfortunately, few and far between with only 51 locations in the continental US. Thank goodness we have one in Dallas!

I remember the Church's you describe from the restaurant in Des Moines, IA around 1983-85.

IIRC both Church's and Popeyes have the same corporate ownership now.

Does anybody remember how Church's Chicken use to taste in the 70's and 80's? You cannot compare Church's Chicken then and now. It use to be so tasty, now it is a greasy inedible mass. Church's Chicken use to have a very thin batter coating that was a light brown golden color and it was flaky. The chicken itself was very, very tasty and was flavorful, but that golden batter was so good it was almost impossible not to want to use you fingers to grab and eat every crumb that fell off after all the chicken was eaten.

I wish I could figure out that recipe, I tried to Google the term 70's fried chicken or 70's Church's Chicken and many more similar terms but I just get recipes for the terrible chicken Church's makes today.

The Church's Chicken back in the 70's and 80's in my humble opinion beat any chicken in the past and the present that I have ever been served. Sometimes I wish I could just do some time travel, get hired at a Church's Chicken back in the 70's and see if I could snag the recipe. If nothing else I could enjoy that great chicken once again.

To no avail, I tried to contact the parent company, San Francisco based private equity firm Friedman, Fleischer & Lowe LLC (FFL) but they would not email me back. I asked them to please bring that great chicken taste back again, or at least give me the recipe so that I could try and make it myself. I was surprised to not receive any answer back at all even just an acknowledgement that my email suggestion was appreciated.

America's Favorite Chicken Company or AFC Enterprises Inc. should buy Church's Chicken back, move it back to Austin, TX where it began and make Church's Chicken the way it was in the 70's and 80's when it was the best and tastiest chicken.

The best chicken i have eaten is cooked by my mom. She cooks so well and the roasted chicken she cooked was super amazing. She roasted that chicken not on ordinary bbq but custom made bbq which was made up of concrete like thing..!

I went on a 3 state fried chicken eating frenzy a couple years ago:

Burger Boy in London, Kentucky for fried chicken wings and some of the best bleu cheese dressing I've ever tasted. They tout their chicken as being "Bauter Better" not sure what that means but it's some fine chicken.

Prince's in Nashville. No secret joint here. Famous among Roadfood folks and rightly so.

Green Acres on 29th ave north in Birmingham. In business since the 40s. Excellent fried chicken, fried green tomatoes and housecut fries, washed down with Michelob draft.

Champy's. Chattanooga. This week. Every week. Perfectly marinated, breaded, and fried consistently. And their "chicken on a stick" at the Bessie Smith Strut was also superb. Alternating pieces of chicken, potato, and onion all battered on a stick and fried as one large mass.

But when you're on the road, there's no better chicken than a Chick-Fil-A sandwich.

Finally got a chance to eat at Champy's during our trip to the inlaws for Thanksgiving and thought it was awesome. Definitely the best FC I've had. It's herby enough for my taste, juicy, tender, terrific bird flavour and what really makes it IMHO is the slight kick. Not "hot" per se but has a little bit of zing that really opens up the taste buds.

Everything else we had there was great too.

Southwest of Chicago we have a lot of really good "tavern chicken" all over the area as well as the chains, sit-downs & one-offs.
I like Harold's in Chicago, Anne's Hideaway in Naplate (Ottawa), Rip's in Ladd, White Fence Farm in Romeoville, Turtles in Morris (original breading, not their beer battered) & Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket in Willowbrook.

Roughly in that order.

The best chicken I ever had was at Willie Mae's Scotch House in New Orleans. Here in beautiful Rochester N.Y. I used to love the "Broasted" chicken dinner At Don And Bob, now long gone.

The best fried chicken besides my mom's was Youngblood's chicken in San Antonio ages ago,down by the Witte Museum.They also had some I think around Dallas. I remember too eating Chicken Delight.
They still are around, but mainly up in Canada,and a few places in the US.I guess we had it when i was a kid when we were going to Alaska,or maybe in Anchorage. Was good anyhow.

I agree. NY state has numerous chicken BBQ every weekend from May til october. There is probably 10 weekly in my area(Binghamton) alone.

I drive between Syracuse, Binghamton, and Oneonta regularly, and my favorite time is in the summer, solely because of all of the chicken bbq's at the little firehouses and churches along the way. That styrofoam container of chicken, salt potatoes, baked beans, and a soft roll is not something to be missed. Even the smell of the wet knap they have in the little plastic bag with the plasticware and napkin brings back good memories!

Best chicken and most consistently good that I've had is the greek "Kalamata" chicken at Athenian Room in Chicago. The skin is crunchy, the meat is tender and juicy. It's a half chicken (bone-in) that you get for around $10, and it sets on a bed of fried potatoes that soak in the vinegar-inflected flavor of the chicken's juices. Wow! I can taste it now. Too bad it gives me such horrible acid indigestion.

Outside of my own weber grill roasted chicken I'd say its a tie between the Kalamata Chicken from the Athenian Room in Chicago and the Dinosaur BBQ's chicken half dinner. I used to eat at the Athenian room when I was in school in Chicago 27 years ago (man I'm old) and judging by Urbanspoon reports they still have it. The Syracuse Dino makes an awesome brined, smoked and grilled chicken, tender, moist and smokey every time.

Roasters on International ave, at the SEATAC airport in Seattle. Sit there sipping a Blue Moon and be mesmerized by the racks of chickens spinning on the rottiserie. I give that place a double yum!.
