That side trip/ alternate route will be a lot of fun, I guarentee !! Kingman was the eastern base for our desert train-chasing hobby for over a decade. Barstow to Kingman and back, we would pace the trains running beside Old 66 in CA, then watch them on the bridge over the Colorado River..then head east to Kingman for food and fuel. Another side trip when you are down in Havasu starts at Parker and crosses into CA following rt 62 and the AZ & CA RR that joins the old Santa Fe (now BNSF) rails at the whistle-stop deaert town of Cadiz on Old 66. It is a real adventure in the eastern Mojave, but a fun ride for sure.

Unless you plan to go out of your way and take a leisurely drive, I don't quite understand why someone would go to Kingman when traveling between LV and LHC. The only town you'll drive by is Needles, CA.

When you clear LV heading south on Hwy 95, you'll be able to make good time. Just watch for the scorpions skittering across the road, they're big enough to turn your car over.

We're not in a hurry to get to Lake Havasu and going to Kingman and Oatman sound a lot more interesting than Las Vegas to Needles, CA! And the food sounds good too.

Mr. D'z Route 66 is a great place and is across the street from a Route 66 museum in Kingman Az. I first ate there in 2003 and most recently in 2009. Also Santa Fe 4-8-4 3759 is in a park next to Mr. D'z. Here is their web address. www.mrdzrt66diner.com

The Kingman to Oatman section of "Old US 66" is a very interesting DAYLIGHT drive. Count the many No Trespassing signs on the gold mining operations in those hills, and watch for the wild Burro's, they are all over the hills on that road...not only the semi-tame ones in the town of Oatman themselves !!

Got it, so I'm going to Hash House on Decatur in Las Vegas for breakfast, Mr. D'z for lunch, Oatman for dessert and end up in Lake Havasu City in the evening. Thanks everyone and I'll post a report when I get back

We used to stay at the Ramada Inn in Laughlin. The hotel was ok but the food wasn't...The only decent buffet in town was at the Colorado Belle. Avoid Needles, CA completely. For some reason the town has higher prices than anywhere along the River. Chow down and get your gas (if needed) in Laughlin before crossing into California, OR cross to AZ, see Oatman, as recommended, and then drop down to Havasu without entering California at all.

It's a little out of the way but I suggest going by way of Oatman AZ, Just East of Bullhead City.
There are live, tame Burros wandering around town left there from the Mining days. The restaurant at The 110 Year Old Oatman Hotel is a treat. The hotel was where Clark Gable & Carole Lombard ALLEGIDY spent their Honeymoon night. Old Town, lots of History. Great way to break up the trip if you have the time.

You're right. There's not much between those two towns.
I've driven those roads in sections and I can't think of a place good enough to stick in my memory. I'm sure there's food in Laughlin NV and Bullhead City AZ, but i can't think of any place off hand.

At the end of the month we are going to be going to Lake Havasu, AZ from Atlanta, GA via Las Vegas. We're flying out of Atlanta late on Thursday night and arriving in Las Vegas at 10 p.m. Our first meal with be breakfast. Looking at the route between Las Vegas and Lake Havasu it appears we're going to have to eat in "RoadFood" establishments because there doesn't appear to be anything between the two cities. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We'll be judging a KCBS BBQ contest in Lake Havasu so we won't eat many meals there but any suggestions in Lake Havasu will be considered.
