Jax in Truckee, CA ~ Hwy I-80

I have a new favorite...!!!

2 weeks ago I was in Truckee, CA, on I-80, ejoying the Sierra scenery...and was looking for food...

The first place I stopped in was Mexican...but the taco's were $7 each, ala carte only, & no combo dishes appealed to me, so I left...

Tried the Covered Wagon cafe, but at $12 a pop for yer basic burger, I left...

I forgot about the summer tourista season in the Truckee / Lake Tahoe area, where city people pay outragous prices for only so-so fare...so I went south, across the railroad tracks...

And I found Jax ("Jax At The Tracks") Diner...it's a classic metal diner building that is larger than it looks...

I ordered a French Dip, and man was I surprised...it was HUGE...!!!

The roll must have been 5" x 9" or so, and it was loaded with meat...unlike many of the typical scrawny dips found elsewhere with skimpy portions of beef...

I almost couldn't finish it, it was that big, and I also had parmegean chips as a side and a milk shake (they also serve you the shake mixing can with more shake inside)

Serving staff was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeble...

As a guy I also appreciated the fact that the waitresses were good looking...

Jax is now on my "A list" of places to eat...

Just curious since you mentioned how pricy the other places were. How much was your meal?

$9 for the huge French Dip, and I think the shake was $5...plus a $2 tip...

Thanks for the feedback, we're headed out that way soon and wanted to get an idea. Looks like a good place to put on the list.

I went to JAX At The Tracks - again...!!!

Another roadtrip and again I was in the Truckee area this past weekend...

This time I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak...

I was VERY impressed by the crunch of the batter of the CFS, and the eggs and hash browns were good, and the milk shake made from hard packed ice cream was superb...

About the only negative was that under the crunchy exterior of the CFS, the meat was a bit chewy...

I'm really amazed at the wait staff...not because they're ALL good looking (which they are) but how they HUSTLE...this place is busy and the staff is constantly on the run...

Once again I had Alicia as my server... coincidence...???

Next time I go I want to try their meatloaf...

Jax is across the downtown bridge ... on the south side of the railroad tracks...

Look at my original feature review on the Gaffey Street Diner in San Pedro and you'll seer I spent a quarter of the review describing their CFS.

@BackRhodes and Ed....GREAT looking food in a classic Jersey Diner. It is ironic that the owner that originally moved it to Truckee,  decided on restoring the exterior, chose to make it look like a 30'/40's Worcester Dining Car Diner vs. what it was....a unique late 40's Kullman Diner. Still Awesome, though and I'm grateful it is doing well. Thanks for the reports.

    Hi Wintahaba,
So what's the difference between the Kullman and the Worcesters?

    BackRhodes,
Just got back from Joe's. Good food, but no one knew the history or story of the diner. No info on building, only that there had been two previous restaurants there. Bummer!

Sloppy Joe's of course! The dinner was good not great. Sandwich was excellent, FFries and chips just ok.
I did some checking on my own. Joe's was originally built in 1993 by a company called PEDCO that made them. The Diner was made for 5 and Diner and also called Blue Star Diner. Not much history----designed from a standard design for a chain!
