WJ,

What you don't understand about hotdish and Swedish meatballs in Minnesota is that it is not tradition carrying on but a humorous inside joke partaken by a generation running those restaurants and food trucks that grew up on and knew nothing but chain and fast food. They are still rarer than your Jewish deli sandwich in New York and there are probably more places in the Twin Cities that serves a Jewish deli sandwich than hotdish. I just crossed northern Minnesota from Voyageurs National Park to Ely to Duluth and saw not a single tater tot in four restaurants. But I did have a great local caught fresh baked Herring sandwich in Knife River.

I say all that and guess what? A new restaurant is going to open up in our town of Excelsior and look what is on the menu.  Tater Tots!

And to think, Tater Tots date back only to 1952 created by an Oregon company.

When some local yelled at you on Chowhound regarding your anti hotdish/scandinavian thing, I believe your reply was "I don't want everyone to think that's all we eat"  (I'm paraphrasing)

I can't imagine a restaurant EVER putting a joke item on a menu (that's ready to be served) the restaurant would go bankrupt in a heartbeat..

I visited 2 restaurants in Minnesota that just "happened" to have hotdish on the menu...that' was by chance- it was NOT pre planned.

The beloved Tavern on Grand has hotdish on the menu, there's another restaurant at your airport that only serves hotdish and your beloved Victoria House had both Hotdish and Swedish Meatballs as a special one week.

And its not for tourists- I once asked my coworkers (before I visited Minnesota) what they think the iconic dish was ....I think the majority of the replies were something along the lines of grits and chicken fried steak...of course no one had ever been or ever had any desire to visit...

I think per capita remember NYC has 20 miillion, the Twin Cities has like 2 or 3 million you will still find more places serving hotdish and Swedish Meatballs than Jewish Delis in NYC. Nowadays you'll probably find more Korean Delis.

I'm a NY native, you think I would know about where I grew up , lived and regularly visit....

    WJ,

Again, the point is you are sensitive to comments from others about New York but choose to be just as insufferable in your opinions about other places.

BTW, the Fargo movie with the wood chipper was not big enough. We have lots bigger. Gotta keep up our image, you betcha.

    In my woods this week...

I'm not sensitive at all, just playing Devil's Advocate. I'll always visit a Jewish Deli when I return to NYC much to the chagrin of my friends...

After mini polling here in Oregon, we've decided on a Salmon Sandwich on Sourdough roll.
Much love was expressed for bay shrimp with either Rogue blue or Tillamook cheddar on a ciabatta roll, however.

OK, the salmon looks good, the dressing looks good and the bread looks good. Take off the tomato and the green beans and I'd steal it from whoever ordered it.

I think they're actually green onion stalks, but I'm not sure myself. :)

If those are green onions I'll take 'em.

I guessed correctly with the pimento cheese on white bread for Georgia.  Wonder what she comes up with for Alabama?

I am not sure about the Wisconsin sandwich. Grilled cheese? Fish sandwich? Nope. I think its a double brat served on a hard roll...not a Milwaukee thing, but certainly served elsewhere all over the state.

I love Denver Omlet sandwich, might have to make one this weekend. As a MN transplant living in Denver, I wish I could get my home state sandwich out here. No-one knows what walleye is. Can't wait to see what the ND/SD sandwiches are.

Actually they got quite a few of the states right.  Only problem with PA is that delicious looking roast pork/broccoli rabe sandwich is only available in the Philly area.  That leaves a whole lot of state unaccounted for!  Western PA should be the fish sandwich which you can find in any restaurant, bar, tavern, VFW, Catholic church, etc.

A "red brat" for Wisconsin?  I wonder how easy one can be found (if at all) outside of Madison; I can't recall ever seeing one.

New Mexico is the green chile cheeseburger, Ohio is the hotdog(I know it's not a sandwich but it doesn't seem to deter Ohio people), Georgia is the Krystal Burger(let's be fair, it's a White Castle through and through with a different name), and Michigan is the Gyro(ok, maybe just Deerborn and surrounding areas).

Why is a hot dog not a sandwich?  It is a middle 'something' with bread on each side.  Isn't that a sandwich?

It's not unique to Delaware and I doubt it was invented there.

I searched for the bobbie and it does seem that DE is recognized as the originator.

                                                            so....

You are probably right- calling it "The Bobbie" probably originated in Delaware, I'm willing to bet the sandwich and its comprised ingredients did not originate in Delaware...

Just like the "juicy lucy" the name originated  in Minnesota however "the stuffed cheeseburger" was being served elsewhere long before it was a gleam in the Twin Cities eyes.
