The Supper Club Capital of the Midwest Sat, 01/18/14 8:38 AM (permalink)
I saw this news video linked at the Lakeshore Laments blog.

Since 1957 Schwarz’s Supper Club in St. Anna has been serving up steaks and old fashioneds to diners from across the area.

Stephanie Schwarz told FOX 11 supper clubs offer an experience different from other restaurants.

“Rather than just an in and out kind of thing, a lot of people make it their special night.  You become friends with who you’re sitting next too and a lot of people come back week after week and meet that same friend there,” Schwarz explained.

And including Schwarz’s there are about 30 supper clubs offering different experiences across Calumet County.

“We thought we’d capitalize on that and actually get it registered that we’re the supper club capital of the Midwest,” explained Julie Schmelzer, director of resource management for Calumet County.

I think we may be able to challenge Calumet County's claim with some of our favorites.

I often regret not spending enough time in SUper Clubs....less and less in NE Illinois and I don't make it across the cheddar curtain often enough!

How many days do you think it would take BB to eat his way through that list?

"Days"...with an "s"...as in plural???  Rather insulting I'd say.

It depends on what's on the dessert menu, of course.  I don't recall seeing a lot of people eat pie in supper clubs.

Its funny, Schwarzs, back when I lived in Sheboygan, was simply called St.Annas...after the town its in. I ate there, and it was wonderful. I cut my teeth on supper clubs, and miss the majority in Milwaukee. The only true one in Milwaukee, in my opinion, is 5 O Clock steak house.....

It's in St. Francis on KK, just before KK turns into Plankinton in Cudahy.
You will be, by far, the youngest person in there. They have a special type of hash brown for a buck upcharge. It might be the best upcharge you'll ever spend. Their fried shrimp are the length of your hand. Small and quaint but definitely a supper club.

I've been having fun looking at the websites (those still valid, that is) and noticed that almost all serve broasted chicken. How cool is that.

MFL -I believe that area is in the heart of Wisconsin's Broaster Belt.

Ed, here's an interview with Ron Faiola, who made a movie and wrote a book about Wisconsin supper clubs:

Maybe Wisconsin's Broaster Belt Poultry Trail could become a national destination. I'm going to write yet another letter to Scott Walker.
