BBQ in Indiana Sun, 11/23/03 11:00 AM (permalink)
Does anyone know if BIG SHOE'S BBQ is still in existence in Terre Haute, Indiana? I grew up in Robinson, Illinois and lived there after I was first married and that was our favorite place to go. We moved in 1986 and were back there one time in the early 90's, but now live in Green Bay and have lost touch. We will be in that area over the holidays and would love to go again.

Yes it is still here, I haven't been there for a while but it's still at the same place selling the same things.

We stopped in Terre Haute a couple of time a couple of years ago. It was still in business. It was ok, but didn't make the cut for my preference list. Nice folks though.

I went to ISU in the 60's and remember when Big Shoe ran a restaurant in back of the Little Slipper Bar on US 41 right off the rr. tracks. He was there for about a year. Great Q as he would call it. Always remember going with him to Frosty's truck stop at 2 am in the morning and them not serving us. Even though everyone knew Big Shoe we still weren't granted service. That I guess was how it was in Terre Haute in the mid 60's

I always make the drive to Montgomery Inn if I'm in the mood for BBQ ribs.

Don't know about good restaurants in TH, but while you're in the neighborhood, don't forget the famous pork tenderloain sandwich. The best used to be at the Trianon Drive-Inn, but I know that's long gone

You have not had a tenderloin sandwich until you visit the Spelterville Inn in N. Terre Haute. Aside from the residents it's the thing I miss most in the Hoosier state.I almost forgot square donuts on rt. 41, perfect breakfast to absorb the excess alcohol from Sonka's and the Ballyhoo.

A short distance out of town in Casey IL just a few yards off the Intrerstate 70, is Richards Farm..Very good dinners and a mini-pork roast they call a pork chop. Worth the drive, but only about 30 minutes away. Stern's reviewed the place in one of their books

I don't know about TH but, if you ever get the Lafayette be sure to go to The South Street Smokehouse. The have most styles of Que.I like the pulled pork with Slaw.

There are two excellent bbq spots in Indianapolis. G.D. Souths at 71st and Allisonville and Judge's at the City Market downtown (lunch only?) Both of these are big league operators in terms of everything you go for in BBQ.

In Indy it's G T South. One just off 37 at around 71st and the newer one on south side.
New entry in Indy and metro area is Dick's Bodacious. It's very good!

The Little Slipper Bar---I remember that place as a friendly hangout in early 70's during college.  There was a murder right behind in the college parking lot during that time....never solved.
