Best bakery in Minnesota Fri, 03/2/12 2:01 PM (permalink)
Bloedow's Bakery, "The Little Bake Shop On Broadway," and reviewed here in the Restaurant forum, and visited by several Roadfood dignitaries, has been voted the best bakery in Minnesota.

It's on the front page today, will be in 'local news' tomorrow.

Heck, Roadfood people knew it all along!

I grew up in Winona, and Bloedow's has always been one of the best things about this town.  What the locals love is the products are still the same as decades ago, the owners are not being stupid and trying to improve on success.

And yes, they did run Krispy Kreme out of town -- no comparison at all.

The name is pronounced Blay-dough, rhymes with play dough.

Oh, gee, small correction.  It's not the best 'bakery', it's the best 'doughnut shop.'  Okay.

I would think they would be nicknamed Bloedownuts! No?

Interesting. I never listen to WCCO radio anymore so didn't know they had a contest. They used to be THE radio station and being clear channel could be picked up outstate. It could be the voters were all outstaters. No one in the Twin Cities, especially the young, listen anymore. Still, that's pretty good. I think the Twin Cities has a dearth of good donut shops and you certainly won't find any in the downtowns of Minneapolis and St. Paul as the article thought.

CC, I like that word, trying to figure how it could be used, maybe in an advertisement.  Or maybe if they developed a new product of some type, a good candidate would be maybe a donut hole, smothered in frosting and covered with nuts.

I'm in there on a regular basis,  I'll have to talk to them.

Davydd, I know you are a pizza connoisseur, and another excellent place in Winona is Sammy's Pizza, they've been there since 1957, and serve thin crust, Chicago style square-cut, with a nicely browned crust.  Really good, and a local tradition.

They are on Second Street and open at 1100 AM, if you are ever driving through.

There is also Rocco's Pizza, since 1958, in the suburb of Goodview.  They don't open until 400 PM.

Other than that, there's not much to talk about, unless you look across the river at some of the places up and down there.

We drive to La Crosse and back about once per month so we do cover the area well. Normally we just do the fast way down US 52 through Rochester and over I-90, but we vary our route going back often up US 61 on the River and sometimes on the Wisconsin side if we are in no hurry to get home.
