I-95 myrtle beach SOUTH CAROLINA to orlando FLORDIA Wed, 04/3/13 10:37 PM (permalink)
Looking for some good places to eat around half point Georgia, or into Flordia. Would like to find place close to I-95. Thanks in advance!

Exit 49 between Savannah and Brunswick. About 2 miles east of the interstate is B & J Steak and Seafood. You will be tempted by the country buffet but hold out for the fresh caught GA shrimp. Wish I was there now...

      Thanks chickenplucker,

      That place looks good!

I was looking for a couple ideas, because I will be traveling with a three year old, and timeing can be an issue sometimes.

      Anybody else?

Another idea is Jack's BBQ in Kingsland GA, exit # 1.  It's about a half-mile west of the exit, across from the truck stop.

Closer up to Savannah, there's Smokin Pig BBQ in Richmond Hill (exit # 102), about a third-mile east of the exit.

I thought Jack's was pretty good and Smokin' Pig nearly excellent, but I've been wanting to try B&J for years and would definitely take that if it is an option.

This is my neck of the woods.

For some of the best BBQ in the country, Southern Soul BBQ on St. Simons island, Georgia. Right now, I'd put up this place against any other BBQ in the nation. Seriously. Probably twenty minutes off the interstate.

Other good stuff: indigo coastal shanty in downtown Brunswick. Only open for dinner on the weekends. Ten minutes off the interstate.

This next one is going to be a surprise but there is a damn good Thai restaurant in Brunswick two minutes off 95.

          All three are kid friendly.

You won't go wrong with any of these.

I too am a fan of B&J's. I eat there annually on my way home from the Ga.-Fla. football game. The shrimp are wonderful. Also in Darien are Skippers and Mudcat Charlie's.

Will have to try B&J's next time up the road as we go up and down I-95 frequently.  I thought I had scoped out all the good places between Savannah and Jacksonvile, but apparently not.

Word to the wise:  B & J's open until 2pm on Sundays.  I missed it by a couple of hours.

After passing by it so many times , I FINALLY tried Smokin' Pig a few days ago.  Excellent!  Had the regular size pulled pork sandwich and the regular brisket sandwich.  Both were excellent!  Just as they used to do at the now closed GA Pig, they toast the rolls.  That earns bonus points in my book.  So many BBQ places have very good BBQ and lousy mushy rolls for the sandwiches.  Toasting them makes them so much better.   The bbq itself is terrific (with or without a roll).  For sides, I had a baked beans and the mac & cheese.  The baked beans vere very good, with bits of sweet onion mixed in.  The mac & cheese was nothing special, and was a bit mushy (I'm a fan of very firm, if not crunchy, mac & cheese.)

Smokin' Pig  will now be on my I-95 regular stop list.

I am glad to read that!  We're going to try and cover the Savannah area better for our blog in future visits to south Georgia, so I don't know how often we'll have the chance to revisit Smokin' Pig as we're looking for new places.  I'll smile over any report that it's still serving very good food.
