Just east of Panama City,Fl and Tyndall Air Force Base is an area known as "Florida's Forgotten Coast" . Wrapping around Apalachicola Bay and containing beautiful old fishing villages and sugar white beaches. Quaint places like Mexico Beach,Port St.Joe,Indian Pass,Apalachicola, and Carabelle. On a working trip this past week the wife and I had time Saturday to venture out looking for some good oysters and ice cold beer. We found both.
We hit a couple of classic raw bars and had a great afternoon. First stop was Indian Pass Raw Bar. Have you ever been roadfooding and thought maybe you were going to run out of road before you reached what you were searching for? Perfect example here although it was an incredibly beautiful drive as Highway 98 and 30A both are usually only yards from the water. This old building was originally a supply store for the turpentine business in the area.
Upon entering its serve yourself from the well stocked drink boxes. If you want draft simply walk behind the counter and draw it yourself. Grab a seat and a waitress will find you. The menu is very simple, mainly raw, steamed, and baked oysters by the dozen. excellent steamed shrimp, and even hot dogs and burgers for the kids. The oysters were on the small side but very fresh. House made cocktail sauce and a good variety of hot sauces on the table along with Saltine crackers by the box.
Baked with a parmesan/cracker mixture. Very good...
